Analysing Argument: Year 12

This workbook focuses on the features and structure of an argument.

It helps you structure a high-scoring essay for your school assessed coursework (SAC) and for Section, VCE English Exam.

In your essay, you must demonstrate a perceptive understanding of the context, evaluate the opinion-maker’s views and values and their credibility, and track their argument.

You will use analytical terminology to show the complementarity between language and arguments and to evaluate the author’s positioning strategies.

You will study a variety of persuasive text types including spoken and visual texts and analyse their salient features.

A low-scoring response lists and isolates techniques without a context. Shows little awareness of the argument and consists of generic statements.

Contrastingly, a high-scoring response shows an awareness of the construction of the argument, differentiates between argument strategies and persuasive word-level techniques, contextualises the features and delves into the multi-layers of meaning, purpose and intended effects. You will achieve a degree of sophistication by setting up your paragraphs in a way that shows your understanding of these features.

Learn how to embed metalanguage in a contextualised way.
