TASKS FOR LESSONS AUGUST 9th and 16th
Task 1: Please Read the excerpts below. We are working on literary conventions so as to improve our comprehension, creative writing and text response. Please do a character summary of each text; also explore the contrasts and the tension between characters. Choose one story and do a list of narrative techniques and their purpose. How do they reflect the author’s views and values? (See “What to Look for”)
If you have time, write a short story based on one of the stories.
Task 3: We’ll also work on words, grammar and comprehension.
Package of Skills
- advanced comprehension skills: author’s key ideas, and message (“explicit and implied” values; (broadening our literacy horizons)
- essay-writing and analytical skills: literary conventions and techniques; creative and persuasive essays; opinion-based analysis – current issues
- written expression: clarity, precision, depth and sophistication (working on some grammar and new words as well!)
Task 1: How can I improve my persuasive essays?
- Focus on issues, key ideas, points of view and supporting reasons
- Focus on evidence: different types of evidence; connection to topics
- Key ideas are the backbone of your essay.
Task 2: How can I improve my creative essays?
We are improving our creative essays by:
- analysing a variety of people-based stories in order to gather ideas (also excellent for advanced comprehension)
- analysing key model stories/excerpts of the masters (Dickens, Orwell, MacLeod, Franklin) (style, tone and literary conventions/advanced comprehension)
- following model structures; analysing dialogue and style
Task 3: How can I improve my written expression? (vocabulary, grammar and advanced comprehension)
- We need to eradicate awkward expressions (overuse of the passive voice; clumsy “how” and “that” clauses; convoluted sentences; crowded sentences (too many ideas heaped on top of each other). (Avoid padding in sentences and in paragraphs; write more with less.)
- We need to improve our sophistication and clarity: active voice, use of nominals; analytically precise terminology; well-controlled sentences (control of subject-finite verb)
Please send me a nice word from your book.
Please follow our word a day – either on Facebook or on our post (it’s the same). These have been carefully chosen to help you gain clarity and precision. Please write sentences copying the author’s grammatical pattern.
