Adopting an urgent, peremptory tone, Mr Trent Davis urges the federal government to continue funds for the SAFE Schools program because, he contends, it fosters tolerance for people’s differences. Critical to his support (defence of the program) are references to the findings from a study as well as to specific details of the program which is about “raising awareness”. Specifically, he uses these details to counter misconceptions in the community regarding the program. He shames the media commentator who, he suggests, is dangerously spreading “misinformation” about “ideological brainwashing and “Sick Freudian-Marxist philosophy”. He uses the research to show that there is no basis for these views, and to expose these views as a sign of popular prejudice towards those who are gender diverse.
Rather, Mr Davis uses the evidence to appeal to compassion and tolerance for those who are struggling with gender differences.
