The role of leaders and leadership styles lies at the heart of both texts, Ransom by David Malouf and Stephen Frears’ film, The Queen.
In Ransom, David Malouf re-imagines the encounter between Achilles and King Priam that takes place in Homer’s Iliad. During King Priam’s transformational journey, Malouf explores multiple meanings of the “ransom” which are important to the way leaders deal with a crisis. The Queen, directed by Stephen Frears, was produced in 2006. Classified as a biographical drama it depicts the death of Diana, the Princess of Wales on 31 August 1997. Frears also suggests that the monarchy must re-engage with traditional symbols and modify their meaning to maintain their relevance in a changing world.
