Years 7- 8 and Selective School Scholarship classes: in-depth study and essay-writing workshops

Classes focus on:
- essay writing on current issues (based on newspaper texts etc.)
- advanced comprehension and reasoning skills: plus persuasive and reasoning techniques (Red and Green Workbooks plus online support)
- creative writing: study of short stories and anecdotal accounts that help students write pieces that are personal and meaningful; (includes people-based stories from the newspaper; Two of Us from the Good Weekend, The Age as well as the study of short story texts from well-renowned authors such as Nobel-prize winning short story writer Alice Munro)
- advanced comprehension: poetry, short story texts and examples from the Year 11/12 GAT
- sound knowledge of grammar and punctuation (blue Grammar book); vocabulary extension and written expression
- concise and efficient essays to time; series of essays based on the Better Essays workbook.

- Learn the “point of view” phrases for persuasive essays: these help you write your essays with greater sophistication. (See sample)
- Write a series of persuasive essays: eg the persuasive based on the doctor’s model re hospitals and junk food: the aim is to construct more sophisticated responses building upon knowledge of persuasive, reasoning and rhetorical devices and techniques
- Keep reading the short stories and articles: (pls bring a plastic folder); notice the sophisticated turn of phrase; new words; character portrayals; also good for comprehension
