Drawing upon the pun into the title, the editor, adopting a peremptory tone, believes that schools are not doing enough to stamp out the scourge of bullying.
One of the editor’s most significant points is that schools are not dealing decisively or effectively with the problem of bullying. Adopting a logical and resolute (practical tone), the editor provides an extreme example, that proves that bullying can have extremely damaging consequences. For example, one boy had surgery to “reconstruct his eye socket” which shows to the school community that during a fight many students can lose control and this leads to extreme damage. This is likely to prompte feelings of frustration and anger in members of the school fraternity. Also the fact that many students feel that they are “talking to a brick wall” reflects the editor’s point that the school communities are not providing solution. Rather the teachers and the principals should be alerted to the fact that many of the victims continue to be exposed to harm and this is again a worrying trend that will lead to feelings of hostility and anger.
The editor also refers to the fact that cyber bullying now gives the bullies more opportunities to intimidate others. The editor includes a reference to the circulation of on-line videos which is bound to unsettle many unsuspecting members of the school community, especially parents. The fact that online footage of “bashings” leads to “free and easy entertainment” is bound to be of concern to all students. This horrific example is designed to anger / perturb/ unsettle members of the school community who are likely to feel that more needs to be done to block the spread of the online footage. The editor expects that the school community will pressure schools to adopt more urgent solutions and deal with the bullying issues in a more resolved manner.
