Crafting texts: Year 11 About Crisis

$28.95

About Crisis: pivotal moments; conflict within, between and without

Individuals often experience a “state of crisis” as they transition through different stages of life.  Or, in the course of their employment, they may be asked to make uncomfortable or expedient decisions that conflict with their values. During a natural tragedy or environmental catastrophe, individuals and communities experience not just physical but also individual and social disruption.  The scale of the tragedy challenges people’s innate need for safety and security, upon which our social and interpersonal needs depend.

Food for thought: Whether it is a “state of crisis” or “pivotal moments” or “conflict”, this workbook contains an interesting array of texts, textual excerpts and articles — each with a breakdown of key ideas and literary features.

Plus sample responses, spanning a range of text types plus reflective commentaries.

Description

About Crisis; pivotal moments; conflict within, between and without

Food for thought: Whether it is a “state of crisis” or “pivotal moments” or “conflict”, this workbook contains an interesting array of texts, textual excerpts and articles — each with a breakdown of key ideas and literary features.

The texts include:  short stories, speeches or monologues (with transcripts), essays (comment, opinion, reflective, personal), podcasts (with transcripts), poetry/songs, feature articles (including a series of blog or social media postings) and memoirs and biographical excerpts.

As you evaluate your mentor text and parallel pieces, you will consider ideas relating to the theme of “crisis”.   Your task is to:

  1. leverage off the ideas of your mentor text
  2. reflect the author’s tone, style and register and
  3. use the literary and linguistic features of the mentor text.

You will need to document your literary journey in your “journal”.  This involves an exploration of key ideas and literary features. You need to show how they relate to ideas expressed and developed in the mentor text.
