Step 1: Identify the narrator’s/author’s main points.
Step 2: Describe Napoleon’s attitude and tone. Who or what
is he criticising and why? Referring to at least three quotes, explain their
purpose and their link to the character’s views.
- eg.
contemptuous; indignant; scornful; deceitful; belittling;
Step 3: Learn four new expressions (words and phrases). Write these phrases in your own sentence. (Use as quotes)
Napoleon says:
- Snowball has done this thing “in sheer malignity;… (malign – to speak ill of someone; slander; pernicious; baleful; malevolent; having or showing an evil disposition)
- Snowball has avenged himself “for his ignominious expulsion” (discreditable; humiliating; contemptible; marked by ignominy; disgrace, dishonest, public contempt)
- “The animals were shocked beyond measure”
- “There was a cry of indignation” (indignant: righteous anger)
Step 4: What narrative elements are evident? Napoleon’s tirade and speech to the animals: the purpose is to criticise Snowball and deflect attention from the pigs; Orwell’s point is that the animals must continue to work hard, focused on the windmill. The point is not to finish the windmill or achieve economic prosperity because this will undermine the pigs’ power and control.
