Description
This workbook matches the VCE English Study Design 2024-2027: VCE Unit 2: Area of Study 2: Exploring Argument and VCE Unit 4: Area of Study 2: Analysing Arguments.
It helps students structure a high-scoring essay for both their school assessed coursework (SAC) and for Section C, VCE English Exam.
In a high-scoring response, students must demonstrate:
- the ways authors employ arguments to position intended audiences
- how contextual factors such as the medium and the author’s persona influence the message
- how the conventions of debate are mediated within different textual environments
- structural features of the argument such as position of main points, comparative and attacking techniques, such as the use of rebuttal and counter arguments
- tonal and stylistic features that reflect the author’s position and the nuances of their argument
- a smart use of metalanguage as a means of drawing out the author’s meaning and showing the complexities of the argument and language
- how written and spoken language, and visuals reinforce each other for maximum effect.
Following the criteria in the English Study Design (2024-2027), this workbook consists of tips, feedback and “Suggested Responses” to a range of VCE past exams. It shows students how to demonstrate a perceptive understanding of points of view, track argument strategies and contextualise the tonal and stylistic features that complement the key ideas.
Students must use analytical terminology to evaluate the ways in which written and visual language are used to position audiences.
