This aim of this session is an A+ in your Year 12 Exam.
I read a lot of decent responses; I don’t read a lot of excellent responses.
To gain an A+ mark, you need to do something special. You need to stand out. How?
I am running fortnightly zoom sessions, to help you sharpen your analytical skills. (Wednesdays, 5.30 – 6.30).
Workbook: How to Write an A+ Essay
Zooming-in
With your first lesson, you will receive my “analytical vocab builder” workbook. Quickly master some clever terminology and then focus on what really matters – the meaning of the text (the direct and indirect meanings).
How you can stand out:
- an ability to clearly identify viewpoints (only one out of 10 students are analytically precise)
- recognise the key argument techniques that reinforce the author’s views and values (These enable you to gain polish and sophistication; you will avoid a generic list)
- a confident awareness of which parts of the text enable you to do a smart analysis
- a confident analysis of key word choices: (Which ones? and why?) Some enable you to explore positioning strategies, and the author’s intentions in strategically and emotionally complex ways.
- In the exam, the techniques are often nuanced. In order to avoid summarising, you need to use your metalanguage in smart ways — to help you draw out meaning int he text.
Each lesson:
We will focus on an editorial, an opinion piece, a letter to the editor and a past Year 12 exam.
You will have access to all my “suggested responses” – which are used by teachers as a “benchmark” for excellence. (Also in my “How to Write an A+ essay)
“Write an analysis of the ways in which argument and written and visual language are used in the material … to persuade others to share the points of view presented.”
