You must show an ability to understand the literal as well as the non-literal, and often ambiguous, layers of a text. This ability will enable you to shine, ie. evaluate more insightfully the author’s positioning strategies and persuasive intentions.
As you read a range of opinion pieces and letters, hone in on, and evaluate systematically, phrases that have an “analytical story”. That is, they have a technical/tonal/stylistic story (figurative, emotive, colloquial language; sarcastic, facetious, or ironic tone, or rhetorical or alliterative significance.)
Zooming in on figures of speech and nuanced and multi-layered language enables you to show your skill and competence in English.

Keep reading the letters: I am finding that students have difficulty understanding figures of speech, puns and analogies. For this reason, they are not able to explore with much depth, the author’s intentions, and persuasive purpose.
