VCE Foundation: attention to quotes, analytical terminology and purpose

July 26, 2021

Homework Tasks: Revision

Please see pages 4 and 5 of the PDF Letters to the Editor Program.

Please choose 2 quotes that we focused on in the lesson and provide a detailed evaluation. (ie type of language, link to viewpoint, purpose and appeal, and call to action)

Honing in on specific quotes: be selective

  1. “In teaching, there is no method that fits all students. In my time as a consultant, I learnt that to be successful, teachers had to use a method that suited the kids”.   Mick O’Mara, Winchelsea
  2. “One of the reasons given for it is that humans will be able to settle on another planet when this one is “screwed up” (or full, I might add).”  Jen Gladstones
  3. “The magic is there. It just needs inspirational teachers to impart it, not grey-suited committees bereft of imagination.” James Reiss, former associate professor of chemistry, La Trobe University
  4. “This revised curriculum takes a step towards chemistry education that is purposeful, meaningful, powerful and current. Remember, this is not about us oldies (what we were taught or how we like to teach it), it is about our students and their future.” Lisa Chiavaroli, former VCE chemistry teacher, Pascoe Vale
  5. “What sticks in my craw is that some are whinging about not being given a gold pass to be front of the queue for the still limited supplies of Pfizer.”   Geoff Warren, Anglesea

Towards A+ – critical skills :

  • ability to apply analytical terminology and identify language choices
  • sophisticated quoting methods
  • in-depth analysis of the author’s specific purpose and intentions
