Year 12, Section C, Ava’s post,Toppdale Community Voice, Toppdale cinema

Learn relevant metalanguage terminology so that you can focus on the context, meaning and purpose of the techniques.

This workbook contains “Suggested Responses” to Section C, VCE English Exam.

All responses have been written according to the specifications in the English Study Design (2024-2027); Unit 4 Analysing Argument.

For maximum benefit, study these Suggested Responses alongside the English Works Analytical Vocab Builder.

The following sentences draw upon model sentences in the English Works Analytical Vocab Builder. It helps you write analytical sentences that ensure a focus on purpose.

The A5 booklet is a very useful learning tool, containing all my favourite analytical expressions.

  • Point of view: p. 3  In an urgent tone, Ava promotes the continued patronage of the cinema without which it is likely to close.
  • Criticisms: p. 5  Ava decries the citizens who are opting for streaming services.  Specifically, she admonishes the 150,000 citizens who are turning away from the cinema.
  • Evidence to support viewpoint: p. 10 Ava substantiates her views with references to the statistical decline in patronage.  She also exemplifies the problem with reference to the personal experiences and provides historical context to show its significance within the town.
  • Figurative language and analogies: pp. 13-14 Ava draws an analogy between going out to dinner and watching a film in the cinema. The metaphoric reference to the extra “ingredients” encourages citizens to reflect upon the irreplaceable social occasion.
  • Call to action: p. 19.  Ava implores the Toppdale citizens to value their cinematic experience…
  • Figurative language and analytical sentences: p. 32 the metaphoric reference to the cinema as the beating heart captures its emotional significance to the town.   The fact that the “beating heart” might stop, she hopes, is cause for concern.

Sample paragraph 1:

Adopting an importunate tone, Ava recommends that the community more actively patronise the cinema to ensure its economic survival. By way of context, Ava refers to the cinema’s historical role as the “backbone for so many decades” and hopes that citizens will continue to value the role it plays in connecting them to the “latest, greatest films from around the world”. By depicting the cinema as a credible historical landmark, which has survived two world wars, she hopes to build a sense of civic pride which functions as a rally cry.
