(Yellow) Exercise 29, Rate rise for junk food outlets, p. 68

Should the council raise taxes on junk food outlets?

Using the facts, the topic sentences and your notes on page 68, write an essay: consisting of 2 body paragraphs and a rebuttal.

Paragraph 1

It is imperative that policy advisers at the council and at government institutions implement measures to restrict people’s indulgence in, or addition to, junk food.

  • The consequences of Type 2 diabetes;
  • Health scourge ($56 billion to the community)/ cost to the taxpayer and to the community.

Paragraph 2

It is advisable, as the councillors  suggest, to use the extra funds to educate the public and to subsidise fruit and vegetable options.

Rebuttal

Contrastingly, opponents or managers at junk food restaurants maintain that their clients are entitled to eat junk food as long as they regulate their eating habits.

OR

Opponents believe that junk food restaurants are being unfairly targeted and that clients will simply switch their business to other cheaper, unhealthy options such as supermarkets.   They say that it is difficult for councillors to categorise unhealthy food items as many businesses have a range of options.  (Or They say that there are healthy options at McDonald’s and so many clients should be taking advantage of these)   (less jobs) …
