Yellow, Exercise 9, p. 30

Essay: Exercise 8, Sharing the fat load

Paragraph 1

A tax is necessary because overweight (hefty) people directly contribute to burgeoning fuel costs which impact upon the cost of tickets. Other people should not be penalised.   (Include facts and figures.)

Paragraph 2

Such a surcharge is preferable to the other alternative which is to make people purchase two airline seats.  (Compare American airlines – shows that there is an important case…  p. 22)

Rebuttal

Opponents say that a fat tax would amount to discrimination and would not be tolerated by members of the community. However, a user pay principle exists in many  other industries because it is only fair that people pay according to the cost of the services.

  • User pay system is often the fairest. After all why should thin people subsidise overweight passengers? There are also cases where trains, insurance companies… taxis have variety of rules..   price differentiation

OR

Some say it would be impractical to weigh people  and that it would be too time consuming.. However smaller airlines must charge because they are directly impacted by the weight of the passengers. (People must nominate their weight…  spot checks and heavy penalties if they lie.)

Conclusion. See  p. 15
