Analysing opinion-based persuasive texts

Based on the Red Workbook, please go through Exercise 7, (p. 11-13) and Exercise 40, (p 55)

Please explore the tone words on pp. 66-67 and write sentences following this model for all short articles:

  1. Adopting a …………….. tone, the author criticises/condemns/discredits, disapproves of ………………………………….
    (Evidence) She bases her criticism on (her own experience? observations? a young boy’s real-life encounter…)

    OR

  2. Adopting a …………….. tone, the author recommends, supports, approves of ………………..
    She bases her support on ………………………………….

Words to go over:

  • Recrimination      – make counter accusations
  • I’ll furl the sail – roll up  and bind
  • It would be invidious  – envious dislike, unpopular  – to bring about resentment
  • Barbarous land – savage ..
  • Swayed by passion  – moved
  • Dogged and thwarted by misfortunes  – followed by / oppose or prevent

And keep up a paragraph from your Book.
