This aim of this session is an A+ in your Year 12 Exam.
This session focuses on “Letters to the Editor” (The Age) and opinion pieces. It covers:
- an in-depth understanding of viewpoints and their underlying persuasive techniques
- arguments and persuasive techniques; you must intuitively prioritise the most important ones to write a sophisticated discussion
- 10 tips: grammatically correct sentences; a basic knowledge of common pitfalls enables you to write with confidence
- polished expression; smart turn of phrase
We will study a range of “letters”, analyse their structure, tune into the most prevalent persuasive techniques; apply the characteristics of formal texts; write in a polished manner.
As you grapple with increasingly complex ideas, your expression will come under pressure. You will stand out if you are able to convey difficult ideas in a succinct, clear and insightful manner.

Those testy squiggly lines!
Ever wondered why your teacher has underlined some of your expressions. If you can analyse the grammatical error in your sentence, you will minimise your errors. Normally, your predicate (verb/object) or a phrase has become disconnected from your subject.
This session enables me to put your writing under the microscope.
I will investigate your sentences, point out any errors so that you can write with greater confidence — good quality expression is a must in your Year 12 exam.

Plus we will follow the Argument: Persuasive Techniques workbook to cover the whole range of techniques. This workbook contains sample paragraphs and essays.
These lessons are available in both “in office/in person” and via zoom. For zoom sessions to work well, you will need to follow these excellent resources. They were perfected during 2021 as students were forced onto online learning. You will need to send me some sample paragraphs.
