Dr Jenny’s classes: regroup; reading; writing; expressing, evaluating and thinking.

It has been estimated that we’ve lost more than 123 days of school. English has been particularly difficult in an online context.

I’m doing a series of face to face VCE Preparation classes for students with an emphasis on reading, writing, critical thinking and expression.

We will read a range of short texts (letters to the editor, critical excerpts from texts (your own and others), short stories, and opinion pieces). The focus is on writing, reading, expressing, saying, thinking, using new/different words with a view to immediate feedback re grammar and expression.

We will do a range of texts:

  • paraphrase and evaluate viewpoints and key ideas
  • apply new words/phrases and analytical terminology
  • identify key argument /persuasive techniques and story-telling devices
  • evaluate the link between argument /narrative techniques and the author’s views and values
  • clear thinking: work through layers of meaning in short texts;
  • evaluate and explain in your own words the direct and indirect implications of word choices and key ideas.

Venue: Kerrimuir Neighbourhood House: 57 Linda Avenue; Box Hill North (parking/toilets/comfort)

Cost: $35 per session/hour

Workbooks: Analyse! Don’t Summarise: The Language of Analysis; My A+ essay-writing guide; Arguments and Essays; analysing and presenting opinion based texts.
