Step 1: Identify the narrator’s/author’s main points.
Step 2: Describe Simon’s thoughts and feelings. Referring to at least three quotes, explain their purpose and their link to the character’s views.
- eg. vulnerable, scared, humiliated, painful
- “Emboldened by my silence”; made stronger, more courageous by my silence
- “I dodged weaved and parried”;
- They “hurtled” questions at me; flung questions at me
- “My inchoate replies” : replies that are just beginning and are not fully developed. “Enough of your scurrilous taunts” : insulting rude and not fair
Step 3: Learn new words and phrases: use in a sentence.
Learn four new expressions (words and phrases). Write these phrases in your own sentence.
Step 4: What narrative elements are evident? eg. stereotypes, extended metaphor of the boxing match; similes (animal in the zoo) . Use quotes and give explanations.
