Lesson 3: Wednesday 22 Feb: key argument strategies and analytical sentences

Well done Guys – great session; great improvement.

We’ve been reading long and complex pieces and focusing on the most important parts: ie. the main viewpoints and call to action (and tone and style).

We’ve done a list of the main viewpoints and identified key support argument strategies. These are evidence (facts/figures/personal and professional examples and recounts); comparisons and attacking devices. These techniques complement and reinforce each other to support the author’s call to action.

Argument Strategies:

please revise metalanguage on comparisons – it’s vitally important both within and between texts; it can be hard; you have to think so only use one term per sentence. (See Yellow Workbook, p. 17; pp 30-31;

Analytical sentences:

To avoid summarising, you must use analytical sentences. These sentences embed and contextualise the metalanguage and ensure a focus on purpose, position, impact, purpose,
