It is imperative that …
The announcement by the State Government that junk food is to be banned from the school canteen is a positive and welcome step in fighting childhood obesity.
The decision to …. should be seen as a decisive move in combating a national epidemic.
The circumstances warrant immediate action.
The implementation of / introduction of an energy rating system is a welcome step.
It is an expedient proposal (fit for the purpose, a means to an end)
It is a beneficial move as it strengthens the campaign against obesity

There are adverse consequences that will occur… arise…
Something is detrimental to ….

• E-waste is detrimental to the environment; (harmful, damaging, destructive)
• Computer games are detrimental to the social (physical or emotional) wellbeing of our children.
• Plastic bags are detrimental to the environment.

Sugary drinks exacerbate the problem of childhood obesity. (to aggravate – make the problem worse)
Use of power is rising/ escalating at an alarming rate. (to enlarge, to intensify, to develop or increase by stages)

Identifying the problem
