Story based on Cold Snap

“Oh my goodness, what.. oh, it’s um.. quite um nice, Granny,” I stated as I opened this strange present and realised that it was a thorny cactus.

“I thought you’d like it dear,”  she said, as she smiled

“Why did you give me this one?” I asked, taking out a thorn from my finger.

“Because you’ll come to enjoy it so,”   she said.

Such a strange gift for my twelth birthday.

She had such a peaceful, wide smile when she gave it to me as if I would naturally like it

I feigned a smile, disappointed and raw. My brother had got the headphones last year, and she said she’d be giving me something special.

Everyone else got headphones and iphones and ipads and new-fangled gadgets. And I got a cactus.

Was this some time of joke

Was granny going cuckoo?

A few weeks later my grandmother passed away.. she was  Sally received some pretty jewellery

It was the end of spring, and I was feeling dejected.

I was running around outside, not doing much, not caring much. And noticed that the cactus had sprouted this unusual purple flower.

I looked once. Twice.

It reminded me of my … and the fun times we had had together.
