VCE foundation: stay in touch with “formal” language

July 19, 2021

REad as much “formal” language as you can

Preparing for VCE

Read as much as you can. If you are limited for time, or don’t “get around” to it, you can improve by completing a range of short-burst tasks.

The main task is to keep in touch with “formal” language and study formal linguistic features.

Read a sample of “letters to the Editor”/The Age every week; constantly reading these letters will keep you in tune with “formal” English (linguistic features of formal writing) as well as typical persuasive and rhetorical techniques authors use to convey an opinion.  The letters are generally written by professionals, consist of sophisticated and concise expression, polished turn of phrase and show us how to convey complex ideas as succinctly as possible.

Analysing these letters enables us to apply the metalanguage that we have been learning throughout the green/orange workbooks.

You will also need to evaluate dense imagery and analogies.

Further, we are also learning to apply a formal style of writing in your responses.

The final task is to apply your quality of writing to text responses and to evaluate an author’s complex narrative devices and their message.
