VCE Foundation, argument analysis and English Language

July 22, 2021

Q: I’m thinking of doing English Language. How can these sessions help?

The lessons are useful for students who are thinking of studying English Language.

  1. You need to demonstrate an ability to understand and convey complex ideas (social purpose/function etc.)
  2. Your expression must be sophisticated.
  3. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the linguistic features of formal language.
  4. In English Language you will consider the discourse features (codes and conventions) of a text: the persuasive techniques are considered to be a “discourse feature” of opinion-based texts.
  5. In English Language you will also consider the stylistic features of a text: the rhyming, figurative and emotive word choices are part of an author’s stylistic patterning devices.
  6. In English Language you will cover social purpose: This refers to the author’s viewpoints and intentions.
  7. In English Language you need to double down on your technical ability.
