In-depth essay-writing workshops
The best way for students to improve sophistication in both their written expression and depth of ideas is to read more and to read better books. Keep up with (some) news and read lots of interesting “people” stories.
Students will struggle to improve their thinking and written skills in English if they limit their reading to the customary two novels studied in school during a typical school year.
I offer a variety of practical workshops that engage students and encourage them constantly to think, to analyse, to summarise and to write. (I will show students how to improve their written expression. For those whose writing suffers from the pain of “awkward” phrases, I will show you why your expression is grammatically incorrect.)
For keen students in the middle-years, I suggest reading some accessible Year 12 texts and joining lessons with VCE students. It’s great experience and good exposure to the big questions.
English Works also holds classes on Language Analysis and Context (thematic studies: a range of source material will also help students develop ideas and expression.)
