Exercise 25, p. 63: Extension

Write a short essay based on  Jay’s ideas, p. 63

Main contention:  It is absolutely imperative that the State Government ban killer dogs before another child is killed.

Some dogs are dangerous killers. They often target children. They are bred to fight and are aggressive by nature.  The Government is introducing tough new laws, but are these tough enough? (question)

Some dogs are not just innocent family pets, but dangerous killers and there is no place for such dogs in our suburban community. There have been many cases where dogs have been left unattended and children have been brutally attacked. For example, in Kalamazoo, a 10-day old baby was ripped to death while it was sleeping in its bassinet. The 22-year-old mother had put her baby in the bassinet and had a nap with her pit-bull terrier. When she woke, she smelt danger. Her baby had suffered severe head, neck and face injuries. “It was simply awful”, said chief of public safety, Mr Dale Headley.  (Choose an anecdote)  Speaking through a translator, Mrs Ancaito said her daughter Ayen was a “very lovely, very clever child”.  “There is nothing I would really wish to be done to the dog because at the end of the day even if the dog is killed it’s not going to bring my daughter back,” she said.  “It’s not going to compensate the life of my daughter. (emotional appeal.)

Evidently, the owners cannot be trusted. (attack the dog owners) How does a dog end up down the road in another person’s house? In Ayen Chol’s case, the owner left the gate unlatched. What about the brick enclosure and chain mess fence?  As one neighbour said who rushed to the attack: “The only person that needs to be asking questions is the owner of the dog and the local council. The owners of the dog have really let her down because they couldn’t control or stop the dog despite her pleas.” Chief executive officer, Mr Trent said the Brimshaw Council had reported 35 dog attacks in the past 12 months. He said it picked up six to 10 stray dogs a day, did an annual door knock to find unregistered animals, ran pet expos, cheap micro-chipping days and community information sessions   (Statistics and expert opinion)  The maximum fine is $4500 for irresponsible owners.  This is completely inadequate when it comes to protecting the community.
