2023 Argument Analysis: Persuasive Language sessions via Zoom

Argument Analysis: (for SACs and Section C, Exam)
Wednesdays: 6.15 pm (Via Zoom)

Please see summaries so far: https://www.englishworks.com.au/category/2023-argument-analysis-classes/

The sessions target your Argument Analysis SAC and Section C in the Year 12 exam. This section is critical to a good mark for English.

Some regular practice can make all the difference. The sessions draw upon the textbook: How to Write an A+ Essay. which includes my favourite metalanguage, model plans, tips, and suggested responses and The English Works guide: Analytical Vocab Builder which helps you intuitively connect analytical terms to the author’s views and values.

Aiming high: model responses

For each lesson we’ll analyse an editorial, an opinion piece, a couple of “letters” to the editor and a past Year 12, Section C, Exam piece. (Many of these will be useful for your oral presentations.)

To achieve high-scoring marks, you need to present a well-structured discussion. This means you must demonstrate a good grasp of the author’s viewpoints and call to action, their key argument strategies and pertinent quotes.

Using analytical terms to impress

(You must distinguish between background and contextual factors and the author’s call to action.)

Students must read the pieces prior to the lesson, and send me a paragraph. I’ll provide feedback pointing out your strengths and weaknesses.

These sessions not only help with analysing viewpoints and argument strategies; you must keep in the habit of reading polished formal pieces in order to improve the quality of your writing.

Year 11: The sessions will also help you tune into different writing styles – especially ideas-based pieces.

Please send me an email: jminter@englishworks.com.au. For students who do the zoom sessions, the workbooks cost $30 plus $5 postage.
