Summary of Tasks for our English Language Classes

Task for the Next Lesson  (Friday 1st March and Saturday 2nd March )

Please write a draft of the essay we’ve been working on in class (negative/positive face needs and face-threatening acts).

Using Metalanguage 

  1. We are constantly using metalanguage. Please see our example sentences-and-metalanguage/
  2. Another Example re commentary writing and sentences and metalanguage

Essays : drafts and samples 

  1. Please see Possible Essay topics based on the examples we’ve been using.
  2. Please use the Safe Schools Program for an example and update essay. I’ve made a start: Essay excerpts for Youth/Identity: and the Safe Schools program
  3. Examples on jargon and slang  and examples-of-jargon-group-identity

Reading Tasks

  1. Please read excerpt of Aboriginal English and Examples of Aboriginal English and make notes
  2. Please read “Rats” : dialogue and broad Australian accent (examples)
  3. How does our use of language reflect our national identity?:  Be clear about what we could mean with regards to “national” identity. Please read this typical opinion piece, by Victoria’s former shadow attorney general, John Pesutto , “hearts and hands” opinion piece published around Australia Day.  This is a well written opinion piece with some excellent examples. (Also links with national identity.)
  4. Re: “is anything taboo these days?”: Please read this Editorial on Fraser Anning and the nazi salutes at the public rally in St Kilda.
  5. Also links with exclusive language examples.  With the examples, and to discuss “taboo” language, hone in on public reactions.
