Exercise 8, p. 28
Should young drivers follow P-plate restrictions for 7 years?
Paragraph 1
Young adults should have a 7-year p-plate trial because it will lead to a significant reduction in drink-related accidents. Such drivers must have a zero-blood alcohol reading.
- The number of accidents among young adults is much higher than those in the general community.
- According to the police commissioner, young adults underestimate the shocking consequences of drinking to excess.
- The Swedish example shows that there is a distinct relationship between alcohol and accidents.
Paragraph 2
Moreover, furthermore, strict restrictions will minimise the risks that young party-goers may take, often to their detriment. Many believe that one or two drinks will not make a difference. They do not realise that these drinks can lead to impaired (faulty) judgements. (Party-goers who drink should not take risks; should not contemplate the risk of driving. Drinking alcohol may lead to impaired decision-making that could be fatal.)
Rebuttal
Contrastingly, many young adults believe that they are sensible and should not pay for the sins of others. They oppose any measures that restrict their freedom just because a few young drivers cannot be trusted. However, even one death is too many, and if these rules could prevent even one death, even among those who would be passengers, then this is a worthy initiative.
