For immediate success, take advantage of our “Metalanguage” workbook for “Arguments and Persuasive Techniques and Language”- an excellent learning resource. (PDF File) This 40-page workbook consists of all my favourite terms that I use to analyse opinion-based texts. I also include sentence models and definitions so that you can use these words in the correct context. I include table plans on paragraphs and show you how to embed metalanguage so as to ensure a focus is on “purpose” and positioning strategies. This booklet also includes a focus on comparative terminology that will ensure you tick all the right boxes.
Please see our sample pages: Metalanguage 29-30
Please also see our A5 Booklet: The Analytical Vocab Builder (metalanguage in a nutshell)
This 40-page document covers: a 3-page summary of techniques; analytical terms relating to an author’s viewpoint and argument base. (the problem; their point of view; criticisms; credibility; evidence; appeals and comparisons and “call to action” phrases).
The section on persuasive words covers emotive and figurative language; the language of reason and emotion; and how to write analytical sentences with a focus on purpose. The sentence models and numerous (table) tips ensure that your quotes suit your sentence constructions and that you embed analytical terms (and techniques) as smartly as possible.
This summary also walks you through (steps 1 – 4) the structure of a paragraph; table tips also help you maintain control of your paragraph so that it does not become an ad-hoc list of random techniques.
Good luck and keep practising. (Other useful links: Arguments and Persuasive Language and Zoom Classes)
